While L’Oreal USA is known for its line of makeup, fragrances, and hair care, this cosmetic brand is working on its image as a supporter of women in science. Partnering with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the L’Oreal USA For Women in Science fellowship program awards five women annually each with a $60,000 grant. The women are chosen for their contributions to their STEM disciplines and their active role as mentors to younger generations.

Since 2003, L’Oreal USA has donated over $3 million in grants toward the fellowship program. Eligible candidates must have a conferred Ph.D. and have started postdoctoral research before the deadline of application, February 3, 2017.

Among the 2016 Fellows is Laura Sampson of Northwestern University. Sampson is an APS member and a fellow at the Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA). Now working as a data scientist for the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) and the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) collaborations, she earned her Ph.D. in physics at Montana State University. She also co-founded and served as president of a Women in Science and Engineering chapter that organized mentoring opportunities for graduate women in STEM.
