Candidate Statement

My research experience in China can hopefully enhance the influence of APS in the Asian-Pacific region, especially in China, and promote bilateral international cooperation and exchanges in the field of physics between China and the United States. Specifically, I have been engaged in the research of quantum physics and quantum information in China for many years. In the field of quantum communications, I have led an interdisciplinary team to develop and launch the first quantum science satellite Micius, and demonstrated space-to-ground quantum communication on a scale over a thousand kilometers. In the field of quantum computing, my group has developed a 113-photon based optical quantum computer Jiuzhang and a 60-qubit superconducting quantum computer Zuchongzhi, both of which have achieved the milestone of quantum computational advantage. I am currently serving as the director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Center for Excellence in Quantum Information and Quantum Physics. Under the leadership of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Center for Excellence in Quantum Information and Quantum Physics is a joint research institution that brings together almost all outstanding scientific research teams in the field of quantum physics and quantum information in China. Using this Center as a platform, we can jointly organize various international exchange programs with APS, including but not limited to mutual visits of Chinese and American scholars, international major scientific programs, training of graduate students, academic conferences, and summer schools, and so on.

Moreover, I am also a member of the council of the Micius Quantum Foundation. This foundation was established to encourage discoveries and breakthroughs in quantum physics and quantum information sciences, and is sponsored by several private enterprises. The Foundation has established the "Micius Quantum Award" to reward scientists who have made outstanding achievements in the field of quantum information on an international scale, which has gained very high reputation within the community. Thus far, 17 top international scholars have been awarded. The Micius Quantum Foundation has a future plan to fund the various academic exchange activities jointly conducted with APS.
